The Original Stand-Up Weeder Since 1913: Our Family Story

Some tools come and go. Others stick around for more than a hundred years. At Grampa's Gardenware, we make one of those: the original stand-up weeder, a simple design that dates back to 1913. Here's the short version of how a century-old idea, a family garage and a lot of dandelions turned into the tool in your shed.

1913: a simple design that just works

The stand-up weeder design has been around since 1913. No motor, no batteries, no chemicals, no flames. Just a handle, a footpad and four steel claws. It's leverage, plain and simple:

  1. Center the four claws over the middle of the weed.
  2. Step on the footpad to push the claws into the soil around the root.
  3. Lean the handle over. The footpad rests on the ground like a pivot, the claws close around the root, and the weed comes out of the ground, roots and all.

You stay on your feet the whole time. No bending, no kneeling. That's still exactly how Grampa's Weeder works today. As one customer, Patti, put it: "Just put the device over the weed and push down with your foot and the weed comes out. It is amazing how well this works."

Why the whole root matters

Weeds like dandelions grow a long taproot. Snap off the leaves and leave the root behind, and the plant can grow right back. That's why a stand up weed puller that grabs the root has never gone out of style. It's also about the simplest kind of chemical-free weed control there is. If you want to put that to work this season, our fall weeding guide covers the best time to pull.

1999: it started in our garage

Grampa's Gardenware began in 1999, out of our family garage in Oregon. No big factory, no fancy office. Just a family that believed in a good, honest tool and wanted to get it into more gardens.

We're still family-run today, and we still keep things simple:

  • A real bamboo handle and a heavy-duty steel head on the Original
  • Lightweight, about 3 pounds
  • No gimmicks and no hype, just a tool that does its job

Why it's called "Grampa's"

Here's our favorite part. When we took the weeder to tradeshows, folks would stop at the booth, pick it up and say the same thing over and over: "My Grampa had one just like that!" After hearing it enough times, the name picked itself. Grampa's Weeder it was.

That's the reason we never changed the basic design. If it worked in your Grampa's yard, it'll work in yours.

The family of tools today

The Original is still our flagship, but the toolbox has grown a little:

One more thing: since the design is so simple, it's been copied a lot. If you want to know how to spot the real one, read Don't Be Fooled: Only One Is the Original Grampa's Weeder.
